A cheetah, the fastest animal on earth, can easily run 110 ~ 120 KM per hour. A common prey of cheetah is gazelle, but gazelle is so small and too fast that other animals can’t easily hunt. Cheetah concentrated on this 'niche market', and has evolved to be suitable to hunt gazelle. Ironically cheetah's shortcomings started from here. Although the cheetah’s body sacrificed everything else to get speed, its survival got on the line for that very reason. Although cheetah’s hunting is usually successful, more than half of its catch is stolen by other animals like hyenas due to the small size of cheetah’s body. In addition, cheetah is hugely impacted by the number of gazelle, because cheetah only feed on gazelles. This is the adverse side effect of choice and focus.

While 'Choice and Focus' made SIMMTECH today, it can also be a threat to SIMMTECH's bright future. Just how brighter the light, longer the shadow is, the more we emphasize on ‘Choice and Focus, the greater risk it can be. I would like to call this the 'shadow of Choice and Focus'. To further explain this shadow, first, it is the wrong direction of the ‘Choice and Focus.’ Second, it is the ignorance of a paradigm shift coming from ‘Choice and Focus.’ In my previous letter, I mentioned the importance of ‘Choice and Focus’ using the metaphor of how placing a piece of paper in the sun won’t make a change, whereas a magnifying glass will burn the paper. However, if we put the magnifying glass in the wrong direction, would we still get the result? ‘Choice and Focus’ with a wrong direction will only make our goals harder to reach. King Solomon is known for his wisdom, particularly for the judgments that he made. The story of two mothers who fought for their baby in a court, which most of us are familiar with, well illustrates King Solomon’s wisdom. When King Solomon was young, he was able to make Israel the richest and most powerful nation through ‘Choice and Focus.’ However, in the later years of his life, his ‘Choice and Focus’ headed towards a wrong direction that led to disobeying God, such as political marriages for peace. In other words, because his ‘Choice and Focus’ headed towards a wrong direction, not only fortune was drained from the country, but also the country was split up and finally destroyed by Babylon. Second, if we insist on what we’ve done so far without noticing a change in paradigm, we may end up far from our original goal. We could clearly see this through IBM's downfall and Intel/Microsoft's rise in the 'Main Frame & PC' industry.
The eyesight of an eagle is roughly 8.0. This is because an eagle has a lot more nerve fibers around its eyes compared to people. Therefore, even from a few hundred miles away in the air, an eagle can identify and quickly dive down to capture its prey. However, unlike eyesight, perspective lets you see wider and farther. Also, perspective can be strengthened through training. We need to develop our vision and perspective in balance to avoid falling into the trap of the shadow of ‘Choice and Focus.’ We always need to have a magnifying glass in one hand and a telescope in the other.
Currently, we are building our 6th plant in Xi'an and the 7th plant (3rd floor in the 5th plant) in Cheongju. If our 6th plant meant ‘Globalization,’ the construction of Flip Chip Line in the 7th plant means our advancement to the Non-Memory sector. Our ‘Choice and Focus’ started from Memory Module, which then extended to Substrate through BOC line in the 3rd plant, and continues from D-RAM to Flash Memory continuously through our 5th plant.
Therefore, it won’t be wrong to say that we already started a journey to be the number 1 semiconductor PCB manufacturer.
To be a real winner who breaks the finishing tape, let us progress with confidence!
